Development and innovation in fisheries and aquaculture

Denmark is the fifth largest exporter of fish and fish products in the world. 20,000 are employed in the fishing or aquaculture sectors or related industries in Denmark.

Both fisheries and aquaculture are experiencing changes and development and the production of fish and shellfish in the aquaculture sector is expected to show the higher growth in coming years.

The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries works to ensure a sustainable development of the sector.

The key concern is to make the most of the quantity of fish available to us. This means getting the maximum value from the catch fish and conserving resources. The use of optimal fishing methods – conserving catch and limiting discards - are important focal points.

There is a great potential for development in the field of aquaculture. Especially within saltwater breeding, more species will be raised in the future than is the case today. The greatest challenge in this type of production is to reduce the impact on the environment and eco-systems.

The Ministry works for Danish fisheries and aquaculture through:

  • regulation and inspections of the fishing industry
  • support for research in fisheries and aquaculture production
  • support for the development of fisheries, the fish industry, fishery harbours and aquaculture
  • fish management and fishing license arrangements for recreational fisheries
