The Danish Food Industry Agency was established on 1 April 2000 by merging the Danish Directorate for Development and the EU Directorate.
The Agency administers EU agricultural policy and EU subsidy schemes for agricultural products, fruit and horticultural products, as well as fish products.
Its aim is to promote the structural adjustment and development of the food sector, including the agricultural and fishing industries.
This is done by promoting activities that increase productivity, encouraging development and innovation of the food industry and affiliated sectors, as well as general product quality.
Other initiatives are the co-ordination of the research and development activities under the Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries as well as the promotion of improved environmental/natural conditions in the countryside.
The Agency receives applications from farmers and companies requesting subsidies from more than 50 different programmes.
Schemes include crops compensation including set-aside schemes, export refunds when exporting to countries outside the EU, livestock subsidies, investment subsidies for the improvement of farms, subsidies for the modernisation of fishing vessels, product development schemes and programmes for organic farming.
The Danish Food Industry Agency has 455 employees in Copenhagen and 20 members of staff at its offices in Tønder in the South of Jutland.
