Healthy and sustainable agriculture

The production of food from agriculture and related industries plays a significant role in Danish industry. 180,000 people are employed in the agricultural sector and related industries.

The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries aims to provide the framework for the continued development of agriculture as a significant sector in the Danish economy.

Agriculture must meet a large number of requirements, including restrictions on use of pesticides in order to protect the environment and ensure the safety of foodstuffs. The same applies to correct use of fertilisers for environmental reasons. Other requirements concern development of new types of products, taking into consideration taste, health, shelf life and climate change, as well as ethical treatment of animals.

The Ministry works for Danish agricultural production through:

  • support for research in sustainable and high-technology agricultural production
  • support for innovative initiatives in the agricultural sector
  • support for development in rural districts
  • support for the establishment and operation of organic farming
  • negotiation, administration and disbursement of the EU agricultural subsidies

regulation and inspection with a view ia. to food safety and environmental protection
